The underlying media—not the Optane product line. Manufacturing at scale ended with Micron’s 2021 exit and Intel’s 2022 Optane wind-down.

In one minute

3D XPoint is a non-volatile memory technology co-developed by Intel and Micron, announced in 2015 as a cross-point array with bit-addressable cells distinct from NAND flash. It sits in the storage-class memory gap between DRAM latency and flash endurance economics. Intel branded retail and datacenter products Optane; Micron briefly marketed QuantX before exiting the technology.

3D XPoint was the science-project that became a product line. Intel and Micron spent years in IM Flash before the 2015 reveal: cross-point arrays, new materials, promises of DRAM-like speed with flash-like persistence. The hype was loud; the physics stayed partly opaque.

Commercial life followed separate branding. Intel’s Optane SSDs and Apache Pass persistent memory put 3D XPoint in PCIe slots and DIMM sockets. Micron’s QuantX path never matched Intel’s volume. When Micron walked away in 2021, Lehi sold to Texas Instruments and wafer output for XPoint ended.

Intel’s 2022 decision to stop developing new Optane generations effectively closed the chapter on 3D XPoint as a shipping media roadmap—though fielded drives and PMem modules may linger in warranty. The Observatory keeps 3D XPoint as the technology name and Optane as the Intel product umbrella.

The Jul 28, 2015 release is the record for the launch multiples and the initial die. Speed and endurance are each “up to 1,000 times” versus other industry NAND. Density is 10 times, not “up to” 10 times, versus other industry DRAM. 128Gb per die is only the initial technology across two memory layers. The July 16, 2018 release still places manufacture at the Intel-Micron Flash Technologies (IMFT) facility in Lehi, Utah, and says second-generation joint development is expected in the first half of 2019. The Form 10-Q for the quarter ended December 2, 2021 records the Lehi sale closing on October 22, 2021, a first-quarter 2022 receipt of $893 million, and a recognized loss of $23 million. Compared to neighbors

NAND flash SSDs use block erase and FTL mapping. DRAM is volatile. 3D XPoint was marketed as byte-addressable, low-latency NVM—a different design point than TLC/QLC SSDs or Optane-as-brand marketing alone.

Uncertainty notes

  • firstSeen is the July 28, 2015 Intel/Micron joint announcement date.
  • lastSeen approximates Intel’s Q2 2022 public wind-down of future Optane development—not the last warranty support date for individual SKUs.
  • Speed and endurance multiples in launch materials are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks on this card.
  • The 128 billion cells, the 128Gb per die across two memory layers, the “up to 1,000 times” speed and endurance versus other industry NAND, and the 10 times density versus other industry DRAM are printed on the Jul 28, 2015 joint release, including footnotes 1, 2, and 3. They are not a later product measurement. [3dxpoint-intel-press-2015]
  • The March 16, 2021 exhibit says Micron will cease development of 3D XPoint with immediate effect and aims to reach a sale agreement for the Lehi fab within calendar year 2021. The Form 10-Q for the quarter ended December 2, 2021 places the cease-development decision in the second quarter of 2021, the definitive agreement on June 30, 2021, and the close on October 22, 2021. Those are two records, not one date. [3dxpoint-micron-cease-2021] [3dxpoint-micron-10q-lehi]
