ShippingMicrowave-Assisted Magnetic Recording
MAMR · FC-MAMR
Shipping nearline capacities from Toshiba pair FC-MAMR with SMR or CMR; advanced MAS-MAMR is demonstrated but not positioned as a volume product in public 2025–2026 announcements.

In one minute
MAMR uses microwave energy—often from a spin-torque oscillator near the write head—to help flip bits in high-anisotropy media without the full thermal cycle of HAMR. Toshiba brands its production-oriented approach Flux Control MAMR (FC-MAMR™); research variants such as MAS-MAMR add localized microwave switching and remain on the laboratory path.
If HAMR is a flash of heat at the bit, MAMR is more like humming at the magnetic moment until it tips. Toshiba’s FC-MAMR™ put that idea into factories first: assist the write, keep much of the PMR supply chain, ship drives.
The next beat is MAS-MAMR—microwave assisted switching—which Toshiba has demonstrated in the lab with new spin-torque oscillators and heads. Public language treats it as a step beyond FC-MAMR, not a replacement you can order by model number yet.
When you see a 32TB Toshiba headline, parse the stack: glass platters, helium, eleven or twelve disks, SMR zoning, FC-MAMR writes. MAMR is doing real work, but the SKU story is always a bundle of tricks.
Compared to neighbors
HAMR locally heats media for writes; MAMR uses microwave assistance with different head designs. CMR/SMR describe track layout; MAMR/FC-MAMR describe how the bit is written on PMR-class media.
Uncertainty notes
- No firstSeen year on this card — MG09 (2021) documents the first public FC-MAMR nearline products; umbrella “MAMR” lab history is not summarized here.
- MAS-MAMR commercialization timing is forward-looking in Toshiba press; treat capacity targets as vendor claims.
- Tom’s Hardware and similar roadmap articles are secondary commentary, not primary specs — omitted from citations intentionally.
